Peacekeeping Plan rejected by Syrian opposition

Opposition parties in Syria have objected to the recent proposition made by the Arab League towards the resolution of the crisis in Syria which has claimed so many lives.

The Arab League made a proposition to send peacekeeping troops to Syria to maintain peace and possibly see to a peaceful transition of power.

However, this proposition has been tagged meaningless and said to be unacceptable by oppositions saying the Arab League should rather focus on the Arab monitors and work with them.

‘Any kind of intervention by the Arab League in this manner will not be welcomed by Assad’s government and it will be a fruitless effort because of the position taken by Russia and Chinaq in this matter, the right thing to do is to reinforce the roles of the monitors and work with them’Dr.Kadri Jamil, the Head of the Popular Will Party suggested.

Both Russia and China vetoed a United Nations resolution on February 4 pressing Syria’s president Bashar al-Assad to step down.

Syria rejected on Sunday an Arab League resolution that included calling for a joint U.N.-Arab peacekeeping force, backed support for the opposition and reaffirmed Arab economic sanctions on Damascus.

A resolution approved by Arab League ministers meeting in Cairo called for “opening communication channels with the Syrian opposition and providing all forms of political and material support to it”. It also urged the Syrian opposition to unite.

The resolution solidifies Assad’s ostracism among his Arab neighbours and will add to diplomatic pressure on Russia and China to lift their objections and allow the world body to act.
